3D files can include two types of files:

  1. Normal 3D Files - Files structured as a single native file and behave as a project file, which includes the whole assembly with all the model parts, e.g., all file formats except .iam, .ipt, .CATProduct, .CATPart

  2. Assembly and Part Files - Files structured as separate assembly and part files. For such files, an assembly file is considered a project file but without a part file. Without a part file, they cannot create any assembled geometry (by using geometry from part files). For example, assembly file (.iam) & its part file (.ipt), assembly file (.CATProduct) & its part file (.CATPart). Assembly files are also known as product files.
